Niger assembly urges government to rehabilitate Bosso dam to address water scarcity

Niger state House of Assembly has urged the state government to resuscitate Bosso dam to address challenges of water scarcity in Bosso and Maikunkele areas of the state

This followed a motion moved by Alhaji Abubakar Gomna, member representing Bosso Constituency and seconded by Mr Abdulmalik Bala, member representing Katch Constituency during the plenary session in Minna on Wednesday.

Gomna explained that the dam was constructed for conservation, treatment and supply of drinking water and other domestic use for residents of Bosso and environs.

“Sadly, for over years now, the dam has been dysfunctional,” he said.

He added that the neglect of the dam had resulted to persistent water scarcity being experienced among residents of the area.

The lawmaker noted that the dysfunctional nature of the dam, residents of Bosso and environ resulted to buying water from water peddlers which the source of the water was unknown.

According to him, water is life and if the issue of water sacrcity in the area is not address, residents of the area were at risk of contracting water borne diseases.

He, however, called on government to rehabilitate the dam and reactivating the dam treatment plant as well as upgrade pumps and essential machines will boost the capacity of the dam to supply water.

Gomna noted that making the dam functional would provide potable drinking water for not only residents of Bosso, but up to Maikunkele community.

Contributing, Mr Idris Vasta, member representing Lapai Constituency moved that the motion should be referred to the house committees on water resources and urban renewal and was seconded by Yusuf Dabban, member representing Lavun Constituency.

The house, however, unanimously   agreed that the motion be referred to appropriate committees to report back to the house in six weeks.
