President Tinubu Calls on Media to Bolster Democracy and Responsibility
President Bola Tinubu has emphasized the importance of responsible journalism in strengthening Nigeria’s democratic fabric. Speaking at the 21st All Nigeria Editors Conference at the State House in Abuja,
Tinubu urged media leaders to exercise their influence with fairness and a sense of national responsibility, highlighting that the integrity of public discourse is vital to the nation’s democratic sustainability.
Meanwhile, editors warned that Nigeria’s democracy faces significant threats as the press continues to shrink amid economic challenges.
The Nigerian Guild of Editors appealed to the Tinubu administration for support through tax reliefs, grants, and low-interest loans, citing the financial struggles of many news organizations struggling to sustain operations and pay staff.
Additionally, Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma, delivering the keynote speech, reminded editors of their role in fostering national unity and cautioned that editorial decisions could either bridge or deepen the nation’s trust deficit—an issue critical as Nigeria approaches the 2027 elections.
