Nigeria Launches $220 Million Youth Employment Initiative to Combat Unemployment
The Federal Government of Nigeria has introduced the Nigeria Jubilee Fellows Programme 2.0, a $220 million employment initiative aimed at providing substantial job opportunities for young Nigerians. The announcement was made by Vice President Kashim Shettima on Wednesday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
This program seeks to empower graduates through structured work placements, skills development, and mentorship, fostering connections between high-potential graduates and practical work experience essential for success in the job market.
During the launch, Shettima emphasized the government’s commitment to combating unemployment, stating, “Our goal is to bridge the transition gap between learning and earning for thousands of young Nigerians.”
This initiative builds on the success of the first phase launched in 2021, which had already facilitated paid work placements and mentorship for over 13,000 young professionals across diverse sectors.
The program is being implemented in partnership with the European Union and the United Nations Development Programme, reinforcing a collaborative effort to equip Nigeria’s youth with the necessary tools for thriving in today’s competitive workforce.
Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, reiterated the initiative’s goals, highlighting the aim to place 100,000 youths in jobs within five years.
He remarked on the successes achieved since the launch of the original program, which has seen over 40,000 Nigerians connected to various economic opportunities.
Ms. Elsie Attafuah, the Resident Representative of the UNDP in Nigeria, stressed the importance of the NJFP as a platform for millions of Nigerians to excel in the economy, while European Union Ambassador to Nigeria, Gauthier Mignot, expressed hopes for the program’s integration into Nigeria’s governance agenda for greater sustainability.
As Nigeria strives to empower its youth, the Nigeria Jubilee Fellows Programme 2.0 represents a significant step toward a brighter future, ensuring that talent meets opportunity.
