Former President Babangida Proposes New Hostels for IBB University.

By Yahaya Zakka Minna.

In a recent meeting with the management team of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBUL), former President and Commander-in-Chief of Nigeria, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, GCFR, expressed plans to address the pressing need for additional hostel accommodation at the university.

The discussion took place during a courtesy visit by the university’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Mohammed Hadi Sulaiman, at Babangida’s residence in Minna.

The Elder Statesman praised the university leadership for their visit and highlighted his commitment to supporting the institution’s growth.

General Babangida emphasized his intention to alleviate the ongoing shortage of hostel spaces for students, assuring that efforts would be made to assist the university in this regard.

In his remarks, Professor Sulaiman conveyed gratitude to the former military president for his enduring contributions to Nigeria and to the university, specifically noting the urgent need for more accommodation options. He called on Babangida to leverage his influence to support the university’s needs.

The Vice Chancellor disclosed that a new intervention from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETfund) is in the works, amounting to approximately Three Billion, Eight Hundred Thousand Naira, aimed at constructing two hostels—one for males and one for females—each with three hundred rooms.

During the meeting, Professor Sulaiman briefed General Babangida on recent developments at the university, including challenges which have led to the temporary closure of the institution.

He highlighted the significant accommodation crisis faced by the university’s student body, which exceeds nineteen thousand, with over seventeen thousand students currently residing off-campus.

The Vice Chancellor was accompanied by several key members of the university, including the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Professor Muhammad Aliyu Bello; Registrar, Alhaji Idris Saleh Kusherki; University Librarian, Dr. Abubakar N. Usman; Bursar, Alhaji Muhammad Alfa Daniyan; and Deputy Registrar for Information, Alhaji Baba Akote.

The meeting concluded with prayers offered for the health and longevity of General Babangida, as well as for the continued success of IBB University, Niger State, and Nigeria as a whole.
