Niger State Government Hosts Inaugural Electricity Stakeholders’ Meeting to Advance Energy Development.

By Yahaya Zakka Minna

The Niger State Government has taken a significant step towards transforming its electricity sector by hosting the inaugural Electricity Stakeholders’ Meeting at the Slyyam International Event and Conference Centre Minna

Governor Mohammed Umar Bago, represented by his Deputy, Comrade Yakubu Garba, emphasized the importance of this event in fostering open dialogue about electricity policies.

He highlighted the potential for transformative change within Niger State’s power sector and urged the Commission to realize the vision of providing adequate electricity supply to improve the lives of residents.

The meeting was organized in collaboration with GIZ (the German Agency for International Cooperation) through the Sustainable and Inclusive Economic Development for Decent Employment in Nigeria (SEDIN) program. It attracted prominent figures dedicated to enhancing the state’s energy landscape.

The purpose of the gathering was to promote a fair and equitable electricity market for energy players and consumers in Niger State. The goal was to create a reliable, accessible, and affordable electricity system that benefits all residents.

In his welcome address, Engr. Dr. Mohammed Sharu, Chairman of the Niger State Electricity Regulatory Commission (NSERC), highlighted the significant progress made by the Commission. Dr. Sharu announced a transfer order from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), which is set for full implementation by July 9, 2025.

Dr. Sharu also shared insights into a comprehensive suite of regulatory documents published as part of the state’s reform agenda.

He emphasized the Commission’s commitment to transparency and expressed optimism about building partnerships with electricity distribution companies to enhance service delivery.

Dr. Sam Amadi, former chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), delivered the keynote address, underscoring the challenges facing the electricity sector.

He emphasized the need for strategic planning and stakeholder involvement to address issues such as low power supply and energy theft.

Dr. Amadi noted that although Niger State has substantial resources, including dams, it currently lacks the industrial customers essential for robust economic growth. He called for a thorough energy audit to identify the specific needs of local businesses.

Dr. Muhammad K. Santuraki, Chairman of the occasion and Pro-Chancellor of FUT Minna, stressed the importance of leveraging the new Nigerian Electricity Act 2023, which presents opportunities for energy access and local economic development. He reiterated the state’s unique position with its underutilized hydropower assets.

The meeting concluded with goodwill messages from various stakeholders in the power sector, all expressing their commitment to the growth and sustainability of Niger State’s electricity market.

This historic meeting represents a crucial step toward ensuring that every citizen of Niger State has access to reliable and affordable electricity, setting the stage for sustainable development in the State.
