Shiroro Hosts Key Meeting to Prepare for Polio, HPV, and Child Health Campaigns.

Health officials and partners in Shiroro Local Government Area convened today at the newly established NPI office in Kuta for an important task force meeting in anticipation of three upcoming health programs: the Polio (OBR) vaccination, the HPV vaccine rollout for girls, and the annual Child Health Week.

The meeting was led by Health Educator Malam Musa Kabir and brought together representatives from the local health department, international health partners, traditional and religious leaders, and community mobilizers. These campaigns are scheduled to take place from June 14 to June 17, 2025, covering a four-day initiative across the local government area.

Overview of the Campaigns:

1. Polio (OBR) Campaign– Focused on vaccinating children under five to prevent the spread of polio.

2. HPV Vaccination– Aimed at protecting girls aged 9 to 14 from cervical cancer.

3. Child Health Week– A special week dedicated to providing children aged 6 months to 5 years with vitamin A supplements, deworming treatments, and nutrition checks. Pregnant women will also receive supportive health services.

In his address, Malam Musa Kabir highlighted the significance of these programs, emphasizing their role in maintaining children’s health, reducing disease incidence, and ensuring that no one is overlooked. He stressed the necessity for meticulous planning, teamwork, and effective communication with the community.

Mr. Ayuba Danladi from the World Health Organization (WHO) reflected on previous vaccination efforts, acknowledging the challenges faced during past campaigns. He encouraged the team to develop better strategies for community engagement, especially in areas with low vaccine acceptance.

Ms. Victoria Jones from UNICEF commended the dedication and hard work of the task force. She urged all members to sustain their enthusiasm and commitment in the days leading up to the campaigns, noting that their efforts are vital to the initiative’s success.

Malam Al-Mustafa Kuta, Head of Environmental Services, raised concerns regarding poor hygiene practices, particularly during the rainy season. He advised the proper disposal of baby diapers and safe management of waste materials used on farms, warning that neglecting these practices could lead to health hazards.

The meeting concluded with a unified pledge from all stakeholders to collaborate effectively, ensuring that every eligible child and mother in Shiroro benefits from these life-saving health services.
