Atiku Abubakar Responds to Recent Political Defections, Emphasizes Need for Unity Against Tinubu Administration

From Our Correspondent.

In a recent statement, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar articulated that the forthcoming 2027 general elections will represent a significant confrontation between the Nigerian populace and the administration of President Bola Tinubu.

This declaration follows the defection of Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Atiku expressed that he holds no resentment towards these political shifts, asserting that freedom of association is a fundamental right in any democracy. Reflecting on the current political landscape on his verified Facebook page, he emphasized that the real contest is not merely between political parties but between citizens and a government that has, in his view, precipitated unprecedented suffering across the nation.

He articulated concerns over economic decline, rising inflation, job losses, and escalating youth unrest, stating, “Nigerians are not just tired — they are angry, and rightfully so.”

Reiterating the importance of democratic values, Atiku stated, “Freedom of association and expression are not optional — they are fundamental rights.” He recognized that political realignments are inherent in democracy, emphasizing that such movements should not foster enmity among political figures.

Atiku also addressed criticisms regarding his interactions with former President Muhammadu Buhari, remarking that historical precedent, where political leaders consulted widely across party lines, should guide contemporary discourse.

He called for a collective focus on unity against what he deemed the failures of the Tinubu administration, advocating for a rallying together of all Nigerians.

“This moment is about collective survival,” he concluded, urging compatriots to reject divisive tactics rooted in ethnicity, region, or religion, which he argued detract from the critical issues at hand and pose an ongoing threat to the nation.
