Niger State Government Presents Certificate of Occupancy to Federal Housing Authority for Renewal of Hope Housing Project

By Yahaya Zakka, Minna

The Niger State Government has officially presented a Certificate of Occupancy to the Federal Housing Authority, marking the commencement of the

Renewal of Hope Housing Project. This project will be developed on 31 hectares of land located at the Three Arms Zone in Minna.

Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, made the presentation to Hon. Oyetunde Ojo, the Managing Director of the Federal Housing Authority, who led a delegation to the Governor at the Council Chamber of the Government House in Minna.

Governor Umaru Bago described the project as a significant developmental initiative and expressed gratitude to the Federal Housing Authority for selecting Niger State as one of the pilot states.

He noted that the state government plans to construct 3,000 housing units, which will include 1,000 one-bedroom flats, 1,000 two-bedroom flats, and 1,000 three-bedroom flats.

He emphasized that the state government is collaborating closely with the UNDP and other development partners, committing to match whatever funds they contribute.

The Niger State Government aims to take full responsibility for whatever projects the Federal Housing Authority undertakes. To support this, a sinking fund has been established, allowing for deductions from the salaries of interested civil servants, which will be subsidized by the state government.

Governor Bago acknowledged that one of the major challenges in providing housing units is the provision of sites and services. He assured that the state government is dedicated to providing essential amenities such as water, primary healthcare centers, and markets.

During his address, Mr. Oyetunde Ojo, the Managing Director of the Federal Housing Authority, disclosed that the housing project would commence immediately.

He explained that the team has developed a plan and will collaborate with the Niger State Government throughout the building process, ensuring that the primary occupants of the new housing units will be citizens of the state.

Ojo further stated that once the procurement process is completed, 60% to 70% of the contracts will be awarded to local indigenes, creating job opportunities for the residents and involving them in the construction process.

This approach aims to ensure accountability and alignment with the community’s expectations.

He recognized Governor Bago as a proactive leader, noting his commitment to development during his tenure in the National Assembly. Ojo stated that the progressive initiatives of Governor Bago in the housing sector challenge the Federal Housing Authority to enhance its performance.

Governor Bago also took the delegation on a tour of the Three Arms Zone, the designated site for the Renewal of Hope Housing Project, and showcased the expansion of the housing units initiated by former Niger State Governor Dr. Muazu Babangida Aliyu, emphasizing plans to decongest the old Minna town.

Additionally, the team visited the state’s ongoing project, which consists of 50 housing units adjacent to the Lawu Estate.
